I’m sitting here at my computer staring at my name and images on Domino Magazine’s blog and I’m completely beside myself.
When I was in college, I had the big dream (as college students should) of being published in a magazine in either writing or photography, but my path did not lead me in that direction… at least I thought. It seems that God was just taking me the roundabout way. Ha!
I’d kind of forgotten that dream until my friend, Kristy Woodson Harvey called me to take some images for her article about woodworker Ben Harper and his gallery Buy Local in downtown Kinston. I was elated, to say the least. It wasn’t just my opportunity that excited me. It was Kinston’s.
To see this Kinston gallery and several local artists be featured in this huge international way actually brings me to tears. I heartily agree with Ben when he touches on the community and people of Kinston. It is so fulfilling to see this community praised in such a way! Kinston isn’t perfect, and no one who lives here is perfect. But that’s just it – they aren’t trying to be. They are just loving and trying to give the best of themselves to those around them. If you don’t know this about Kinston, I would love to introduce you to some people. (Seriously, let me know.)
I am so honored to have played a small part in this spotlight on Kinston! I hope this is the first of many opportunities!
Such a wonderful article, Kristy! Ben, I can’t wait to see your Chinese lacquer pieces emerge from the earth in a few months! I hope I can be there to document it!
