Anna and I arrived at the base almost an hour early and met Anna’s friends who would join us in welcoming Anna’s husband Jonathan and another friend home from deployment. The anticipation and excitement of the group of friends waiting to welcome home the two soldiers grew as time passed. The number of people grew, too! I was amazed to see family after family come up to Anna to show their support and witness her reunion with her husband. They had signs flags ready to lift when the plane landed.
For over an hour we waited for this group of about 45 soldiers to arrive home safely. Every jet that landed or took off started a stir in the crowd. Dusk turned to darkness and the stars began to twinkle in the sky. Luckily, Anna’s friends had brought glow in the dark flags! One of the wives of another soldier even had a light-up sign! Finally, we got word that the plane was one minute away!
The crowd quickly moved closer to where the boys would meet us. there were ropes that marked where we could stand. The plane landed and sat for what must have been 10 minutes. For a while, Anna stood in the back of the crowd, but friends urged her to push her way forward. Finally, we were in the front, and we saw the soldiers appear. Everyone was on tiptoe trying to get an eye on their guy. They walked between 2 lines of men holding American flags. The soldiers’ arms were full of their gear.
Jonathan was one of the last to appear. Anna and a friend didn’t want to wait any longer. They sprinted past the ropes toward the men as the men dropped their gear and caught the girls in their arms. It was so much better than the movies. This was real. Real people who are fighting a real war and living real lives.
Anna & Jonathan, I am so happy for y’all! Thank you for letting me share in this special moment and capture it for you!
It is SUCH a privilege to be able to capture the reunion of soldiers with their families after deployment. There is absolutely nothing like it. It reminds me of what these soldiers sacrifice for our country and justice throughout the world. God bless our soldiers and their loved ones.
